HOW TO OBTAIN MEDICAL INSURANCE IN MEXICO

National health insurance may be obtained by any foreigner who qualifies through the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social [IMSS]. The requirements are as follows:

1. Two copies of passport
2. FM-2 or FM-3 visas showing photos
3. Marriage certificate, translated, if relevant.
4. Proof of residence, such as bills and/or rental contract or title of property
5. Birth certificates for children, if relevant. 

COVERAGE INCLUDES:
Doctor’s visits
Laboratory tests
Prescription drugs
Dentistry
Eye examinations
Hospital and surgical care
Emergency and ambulatory services

PROCEDURE:
Applications accepted at any time of the year. When applying, you will be sent to a medical clinic to complete:

Medical review form
Basic laboratory tests
Chest x-ray
Cursory physical exam

COST:
Cost is approximately $300.00 per year and include the following if reside in the same household:

Head of household
Wife
Children to age 16, or to age 25 if enrolled in a Mexican school
Parents

Apply for renewal 30 days prior to expiration of coverage.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:

IMSS also has nursing homes for the elderly, and day care centers.

Most Blue Cross-Blue Shield policies are valid as are many other private insurance policies.
