CAVEATS:
If need to depart Mexico without your car, obtain a notarized letter from attorney indicating you have not left the car illegally.
Only authorized persons may drive the car; do not permit an unauthorized person to drive the car when the registered owner is not in the vehicle. If your spouse is not on the registration, have the customs agent note on the car permit that she is authorized to drive the car.
In the event of an accident, the law requires that your vehicle be held until damages are paid or until you guarantee proper payment via an insurance policy. If bodily injury is involved, the police may detain you until the problem is resolved.
If you rent a car in Mexico and suffer an accident, you must report the accident within six hours, otherwise the insurance company will not pay.
